even I don't know how to use them and I've been using various ad blockers for. Those are advanced mechanics that you generally don't need to concern yourself with for effective ad blocking. This is not a cause for concern, and is to prevent the browser's INTERNAL pages (not the actual internet) from breaking. I think there's a few things on the Whitelist by default (at least in Firefox). Again, modern ad blockers are pretty good so this doesn't frequently happen. The main purpose of a whitelist is to prevent a site from not working due to some content being blocked. If you block something by accident, you will also find it in this section and can remove it by deleting the offending text and then applying changes.Ī Whitelist is essentially a list of stuff that WILL NOT BE BLOCKED. This will (hopefully, unless it's a dynamic element in which case a little more savvy is required) prevent it from showing up again. Quite frankly, modern ad blockers are so good that this is rarely necessary, but if you do wish to block some offending content, you can generally do so by right clicking it, hitting "Block Element" and then going to the box in the bottom right of your screen to view the address of the element to be blocked and then hitting "Create". They're a list of things to block, but it's a list that YOU create. "My Filters" function exactly the same as Third Party Filters. If you don't have third-party filter lists, you would have to manually block every ad you come across yourself, which would be rather tedious particularly without technical knowledge. Ublock downloads third-party filter lists periodically and automatically by default, and uses them to quickly compare with content trying to load in your browser and block accordingly. Rather, the people who DO maintain those filter lists simply haven't updated them to properly block some new ads yet. Interestingly, with a few minor exceptions these lists aren't actually maintained BY uBlock Origin, so ads you might occasionally see aren't usually due to a deficiency in UBlock. Modern adblockers like uBlock rely on lists of ads (and servers that deliver the ads) maintained by various communities of people. Third Party Filter- Third party means that it's created by someone else. Here's a little bit of description of the various core terminology though. I think in theory you could enhance privacy a little more, but you'd have to learn quite a bit and from your confusion at the terminology in the app that's probably a little out of your (and indeed, even my) realm of knowledge. Who knows how long they will keep their promise of upholding the compatibility with adblockers, until they decide to shaft it as well.Just a heads up, I'm basing this on the uBlock Origin settings for Firefox, but I'm pretty sure they're the same.įirst and foremost, you should be fine with the default settings for effective ad blocking (and thus considerable privacy enhancements). I'd also like to believe Firefox would be the last bastion of holding the line in making Ublock and other adblockers work without an hassle for a long time, but after seeing the decisions of Mozilla and their inconsistencies over the last couple of years, I wouldn't hold my breath tbh since they go after Google's money. Time will tell and guess we have to wait to see what happens in the Chromium scene. Until January 2023 a lot still can happen also there is still the extended support for Enterprise that ends in June 2023, which apparently Brave afaik will keep using it until Enterprise fades away, then Manifest V2 will be fully gone.Īnother solution if Ublock or other adblockers get shafted due to V3, is for example DNS adblockers like Adguard which install the software on your Operating System to block ads which is one of the options, but it's not as effective as Ublock imo but does it's job. There might be hope according to this post on ublock's github. So far not everything is set on stone as a lot can change and there might be ways that can be found to counter Manifest V3.
